What Is The Legal Situation For EMF Exposure?
Exposure to EMFs can be harmful to human health. Because of this, the UK government has introduced EMF regulatory requirements and limits, in the form of the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations. From July 2016, it is every employer’s duty to assess, and if necessary limit, their workers’ exposure to electromagnetic fields. If you exceed limits in this new legislation, you could face enforcement action from the HSE. The limits in the Control of EMF at Work Regulations are made up of two tiers, a first check involving measurements and, if these are exceeded, a more accurate evaluation involving EMF safety modelling.
Who Can Carry Out EMF Safety Modelling?
EMFcomp Limited is the only organisation in the UK that can perform this EMF safety modelling at both low and high frequencies. We are highly experienced in FDTD and SPFD computer simulations of the more complex exposure situations, as our publication track record demonstrates. EMFcomp managing director, Dr Richard Findlay, has published more than 20 papers on computational electromagnetics in the peer-reviewed, scientific research literature.
What Are The Benefits?
The results of a FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) safety modelling study can often allow a working practice, previously prohibited by measurements that exceed EMF Regulation Action Levels, to continue. This means that your employees can continue their work without any changes to their procedures or workplace. Applications where EMF safety calculations have helped include welding, induction heating, electric transport, non-destructive testing, antennas, medical devices, demagnetisers, energy generation and distribution (substations, power lines and transformers).
All EMFcomp assessors are Chartered Radiation Protection Professionals, educated to PhD level and Members of the Society for Radiological Protection. These qualifications guarantee that best practice is applied to EMF assessments. EMFcomp Limited has a huge amount of knowledge and experience in radiation safety and the new EMF Regs. Our award-winning services are able to decipher the details within EMF legislation and present them in easy to understand language.
Selected organisations we have worked with include: The European Commission • AT&T • EDF Energy • Nissan • Public Health England • Royal Society of Canada • Jaguar Land Rover • BT • TDK Lambda • Queen Mary University London • Capita • WSP • Glasgow Airport • ABB • BT Sport • Mitsubishi • Newcastle University • Siemens
Our company is a specialist in authoritative EMF safety advice and services. We recently co-wrote the European Commission’s Guide on EMF Safety, ‘The Practical Guide to the EMF Directive’ that forms the basis for assessing compliance with new UK EMF law ‘The Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016’ (CEMFAW). The advice, measurement and modelling services that we provide in electromagnetic safety are based on the published scientific research.
